Aerial view of American fighter Jets at Beaufort Air Station. This photograph was part of a series commissioned by the publishers Wyatt and Co. for a book of aerial images of South Carolina. In Europe it would have been practically impossible to capture a similar image to this due to tight flying regulations at this height over military airports. Shooting aerial photographs here, I hired a rather old Hughes 300 helicopter for eight weeks and we kept the machine in the garden of the house I was staying in. A Hughes 300 is a fairly small 3 seater single engined piston helicopter, but for this kind of work I found it an ideal platform to shoot from.
Aerial view of The Awakening, Washington D.C. This is an extraordinary piece of work, especially seen from up here. The giant has been a District resident since 1980, the year of the Eleventh International Sculpture Conference that scattered 500 sculptures throughout the city. I shot this aerial photograph of the sculpture in both black and white and colour but recently printed it in black and white as I was updating my portfolio of aerial commissions. The Awakening by J. Seward Johnson, Jr was placed on permanent loan to the US Department of the Interior, which owns the land. I shot this image from a twin engined helicopter I was using to take aerial views of the whole of Washington D.C.
